When it comes to plastic injection molding, maximizing your output is key. Of course, quality is key in ensuring that parts are produced consistently and accurately for your customer's needs. But how can we make things more efficient beyond this? This is where family and multi cavity plastic injection molds come into play. A single cavity injection mold will serve it's purpose for moderate quantity production runs and larger parts. However, in our experience, there are a number of industries (including plastic exterior decorative fences, gates, as well as the medical industry) where using a family or multi cavity plastic injection mold will really step up your production rate.
What's the difference between family cavity injection molds and multi cavity injection molds?
At it's most basic description, the multi cavity mold is utilized when you're manufacturing multiples of the exact same part. The multi cavity plastic injection mold is a great way to maximize the use of your mold base. The cost savings not only come in increased production times, but also on the Tool & Die side of the work as well. We can build a four cavity mold for you that is far less expensive than building four individual injection molds.
Family plastic injection molds are a little different, but serve a similar purpose. What makes a family injection mold different is that it produces multiple parts that are similar in size but aren't the exact same. These can be used when manufacturing plastic parts for an assembly, such as a plastic phone, or speaker. However, one thing to ensure that is maintained in this mold base design is to maintain similar sized gating (the line that runs from the flow to the part) to all components within the injection mold. This is important because the cycle times need to be consistent within the mold for proper production.
